Tragedy struck in the Karia area of Kirinyaga County as a middle-aged woman lost her life when a four-story building under construction collapsed.
Edward Muriuki, the brother-in-law of the deceased, reported that the incident occurred on Wednesday morning while the woman and her two children were asleep.
Neighbors were able to rescue the two children who were sleeping in one of the rooms.
The two children were sleeping in a separate room, but unfortunately, heir mother’s room was situated near the collapsed building.
Edward Muriuki mentioned that his sister-in-law had sold the piece of land to a trader from Kerugoya who was constructing the collapsed building. Her house bordered the collapsed structure.
A security team, headed by Kirinyaga Central police commander John Torori, swiftly arrived at the scene. They are currently awaiting the arrival of the building owner and the contractor for further investigation.
“I would like to assure you that we are going to investigate this incident as we wait for the owner of the building and if we find he violated the stipulated rules of construction action will be taken,” Torori said.
