The Transport and Infrastructure Committee of the National Assembly has raised concerns regarding the escalating toll of road damage across the country, caused by the persistent floods.
The committee’s chair, MP George Kariuki (Ndia), issued a call to action to both leaders and citizens, stressing the urgent need to confront this issue.
The committee cautions that failure to address the situation promptly will inevitably result in the paralysis of transportation systems nationwide.
“Most of our roads have been damaged also bridges and culverts. We are not seeing leaders addressing this in their areas,” he said.
He expressed optimism that once the relentless rains relent, the national government will swiftly enact measures to address the aftermath. The torrential downpours have wreaked havoc, causing substantial damage to bridges and drainage systems, resulting in flooding in several regions.
On April 30, a segment of the Embu-Meru highway was shuttered due to the discovery of cracks. Subsidence of soil beneath a crucial bridge prompted the closure, necessitating the redirection of traffic to ensure safety.
Tragically, the ongoing floods have claimed numerous lives, with the death toll reaching 228 as of the latest count, while a staggering 42,526 households have been displaced from their homes.
