Gor Mahia took a significant step towards clinching the Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Shabana FC at Mamboleo Grounds Stadium in Kisumu.
The decisive moment came in the 34th minute of the opening half when striker Benson Omalla found the back of the net, securing the lone goal of the match for Gor Mahia.
Despite Shabana’s efforts to mount a comeback in the second half, the tight defensive display from Gor Mahia prevented any further goals, sealing the crucial win.
With this victory, K’Ogalo extended their lead at the top of the KPL table to 63 points, maintaining a comfortable 12-point gap ahead of second-place Police FC.
However, the defeat leaves Shabana in a precarious position, tied with Sofapka on 28 points and hovering just above the relegation zone.
The race for the golden boot intensifies as Omalla’s goal takes his tally to 13, putting him level with Police FC striker Tito Okello. With only five matches remaining, the competition for the golden boot promises to be tightly contested.
In other KPL matches, Kariobangi Sharks secured a dominant 5-2 victory over Sofapaka, maintaining their 10th place position on the league table. Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars played out a goalless draw against Muhoroni Youth, and KCB settled for a 1-1 draw against Nzoia Sugar, with both teams maintaining their respective positions on the log.
