Rodgers Oloo, a passionate young man from Nakuru County, has captured the hearts of many with his unique companionship with a hawk named Johnson. We met Rodgers far from his home in the bustling Nairobi Central Business District.

Rodgers’ story is far from ordinary. Known as the Nakuru Street Boy, he has become a familiar face in Nairobi’s streets, but it was his bond with Johnson that turned him into an overnight celebrity. He discovered the frail bird near a local supermarket and, moved by compassion, decided to care for it.

“I saw the bird near a local supermarket and decided to have a closer look at it given its frail stature,” Rodgers told Citizen Digital.

Providing food and shelter, Rodgers nurtured the bird back to health. Over time, Johnson transformed from a weak creature into a spirited feathered friend, forging a special bond with Rodgers. They communicate uniquely, with Johnson responding to Rodgers’ cues and even perching on his shoulder when beckoned.

Rodgers, despite his street background, has a commendable education. He has completed basic computer courses, including cybersecurity, and has knowledge in first aid and mortuary services. His aspiration is to secure a formal job while maintaining his bond with Johnson.

Some people view their relationship with suspicion, but Rodgers and Johnson remain resilient, proving that their companionship is genuine and enduring. Their story continues to inspire, showcasing a remarkable bond between man and bird.
