President William Ruto has announced plans to elevate Bungoma to city status, positioning it as Kenya’s fifth city. Speaking in Bungoma on Friday, ahead of Madaraka Day celebrations, President Ruto revealed his administration’s intention to develop the Western town to a level comparable to Nairobi, the nation’s capital.

“For Bungoma, I am planning to come up with a comprehensive plan to transform it into a city, reaching the level of Nairobi City,” he stated.

Additionally, President Ruto committed to addressing Bungoma’s long-standing electricity issues. He noted that the government has already allocated Ksh.2 billion to improve power access in the region.

“I also want to promise you that I will ensure you access electricity. I have been informed there are many places that have been hit by darkness, and you know the devil loves darkness,” Ruto said. “So we have allocated Ksh.2 billion in this financial year for Bungoma County to ensure over 20,000 households access electricity.”

Currently, Kenya has four cities: Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, and Nakuru, which was elevated to city status by former President Uhuru Kenyatta in December 2021.
