Samoa To Stay On Course For World Rugby Series Return

The Kenya Sevens team, Shujaa, commenced their World Rugby Series promotion campaign with a strong start by defeating Samoa 19-12 in their opening Pool B match at the Civitas Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid, Spain, on Friday evening.

Shujaa began impressively, with co-captain Vincent Onyala scoring the first try and fellow captain Tony Omondi successfully converting, giving Kenya an early 7-0 lead. Patrick Odongo quickly followed up with another try, extending the lead further.

Samoa responded with two quick tries and a conversion, leveling the scores at half-time. The second half saw tense exchanges between the two sides, but Kenya managed to keep their composure. A crucial turnover allowed Patrick Odongo to break through Samoa’s defense once more, scoring a try under the posts. Tony Omondi’s conversion sealed the 19-12 victory for Kenya.

Next, Kenya is set to face hosts Spain at 10:18 PM local time on Friday. Shujaa is in Pool B alongside Spain, Samoa, and Chile. A strong performance in the group stages is essential for Kenya to secure a spot in the quarterfinals.

Pool A includes Germany, USA, Uruguay, and Canada. Kenya needs to win at least two pool matches to ensure advancement to the quarterfinals.
