Juventus Appoints Thiago Motta as New Head Coach

Juventus has appointed Thiago Motta as their new head coach, succeeding Massimiliano Allegri, the Serie A club announced on Wednesday.

“Juventus is delighted to announce Thiago Motta as the new First Team head coach. The Italian-Brazilian has signed an agreement with the Club until June 30, 2027,” Juventus stated.

Motta, 41, earned acclaim for leading Bologna to a historic Champions League place in his second season. His possession-based football, characterized by an advanced press and building from the back, won over Bologna fans despite initial skepticism when he replaced Sinisa Mihajlovic in September 2022.

Motta’s managerial career began with a brief stint at Genoa, which ended after just two months. He then led Spezia to Serie A survival in a single season before moving to Bologna. Despite a slow start at Bologna, failing to win in his first four games, he led the team to a ninth-place finish in the 2022-23 season. Bologna was last season’s surprise package, finishing fifth and losing only six games.

“I am really happy to begin a new chapter at the helm of a great club like Juventus. I thank the owners and the management, who can be sure of my ambition to keep the Juventus flag flying high and to please the fans,” said Motta. He left Bologna last month after deciding not to renew his contract.

Massimiliano Allegri was sacked on May 17 due to behavior deemed “incompatible with the values of Juventus” during and after the Coppa Italia final win over Atalanta. Allegri was sent off for protesting refereeing decisions and clashed with match officials, Juventus staff, and a newspaper director after the game.

Last season, Juventus struggled in their Scudetto bid, initially challenging Inter Milan but faltering in the latter half of the campaign, with only three wins in their last 17 league games.
