Diogo Costa completed his heroic performance with a third save against Benjamin Verbic, leaving Bernardo Silva the chance to seal the win.
Silva coolly converted the penalty, sparking wild celebrations amongst the Portuguese players, with a tearful Ronaldo finally able to smile.
