Ulinzi Starlets made history by defeating Kibera Soccer Ladies 2-1 to successfully defend their Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Women’s Cup title, becoming the first team to achieve a record three-time victory. The match, held at Police Sacco Stadium in Nairobi, showcased Ulinzi’s dominance from the start.
Captain Sheryl Andiba set the tone early with a goal in the fifth minute, putting Ulinzi in the lead. The soldiers continued to press forward, nearly doubling their lead moments later, but Lucy Nato’s shot was expertly saved by Kibera’s goalkeeper, Vivian Shiyonzo. Despite relentless pressure, Ulinzi’s Neddy Atieno missed a chance in the 8th minute, and Fasila Adhiambo’s attempt in the 20th minute sailed wide.
However, Ulinzi capitalized on their opportunities, extending their lead to 2-0 just before halftime through Lynda Kihara’s goal in the 40th minute. The halftime scoreline favored Ulinzi, who looked poised to maintain their lead.
In the second half, Kibera Soccer Ladies returned revitalized and managed to score a consolation goal in the 75th minute, courtesy of Maximillah Robi, who came on as a substitute. Despite Kibera’s efforts to equalize, Ulinzi’s defense held firm, denying several attempts.
Coach Joseph Wambua Mwanza commended his team for managing the game effectively despite the pressure in the second half. He emphasized their ability to maintain their lead and secure the victory, acknowledging Kibera’s improved performance after the break.
Kibera Soccer Ladies’ coach, David Vijago, attributed the loss to his team’s new lineup, noting that they had not fully integrated yet. He praised Ulinzi for their strong performance throughout the season and acknowledged his team’s effort despite the defeat.
With the conclusion of the FKF Women’s Cup, the 2023/2024 season draws to a close. Both teams will now focus on pre-season preparations for the upcoming season scheduled to commence in August.
