President William Ruto has announced the immediate dismissal of all Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney General, retaining only Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi. In a national address from State House Nairobi on Thursday afternoon, President Ruto cited a comprehensive review of the cabinet’s performance and public feedback as reasons for his decision.

“I have, in line with the powers given to me by Article 152(1) and 152(5)(b) of the Constitution and Section 12 of the Office of the Attorney-General Act, decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the Cabinet Secretaries and the Attorney-General from the Cabinet of the Republic of Kenya except the Prime Cabinet Secretary and Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs,” Ruto stated.

With the cabinet dissolved, Principal Secretaries will now manage daily government operations. President Ruto emphasized that he will begin extensive consultations across various sectors and political groups to form a “broad-based government” that is “lean, inexpensive, effective, and efficient.”

He pledged to assemble a new team to help tackle issues such as national debt, resource mobilization, job creation, eliminating government inefficiencies, and fighting corruption. This reshuffle occurs just under two years since Ruto appointed his 24-member Cabinet on October 26, 2022.
