Kenyan marathoner Kemei Elias Kiprono has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) following his alleged use of the banned substance Trimetazidine.
According to a statement released by the AIU, Elias Kiprono has been formally charged with violating Article 2.1 and Article 2.2 of the anti-doping regulations.
“The AIU has provisionally suspended Elias Kiprono (Kenya) for the Presence/Use of a Prohibited Substance (Trimetazidine),” the AIU said.
Kiprono’s suspension renders him ineligible to complete in any athletics events until a final decision is reached through a hearing conducted under either the World Athletics Anti-Doping Rules or the Integrity Code of Conduct.
The 26-year-old athlete, whose most recent race was the Lagos Marathon in February 2021, previously secured victory in the Pune Marathon in India last December, achieving a time of 2 hours, 16 minutes, and 5 seconds.
The rigorous enforcement of anti-doping measures by the AIU has also impacted two other Kenyan athletes this year. Former world youth champion Jackline Wambui and Josephine Chepkoech were both handed lengthy suspensions as a result.
