In a heartwarming gesture during his final home game, Borussia Dortmund veteran Marco Reus treated around 25,000 fans in the club’s “Yellow Wall” to beers. The match, held at the iconic Westfalenstadion, saw Reus scoring a goal and assisting another in a 4-0 victory over Darmstadt, marking a memorable send-off for the Dortmund-born star.
Reus, who will leave Dortmund at the end of the season, expressed his gratitude through handwritten notes displayed at vendors in the south stand. The notes read, “Thank you for everything. The goodbye beers are on me. Your Marco,” showing his deep appreciation for the fans’ unwavering support throughout his career.
Reus shared with Sky that the idea had been planned for a while, with the club’s marketing team executing it flawlessly. Each beer costs around five euros ($5.50), bringing the total cost to approximately 125,000 euros, assuming each of the 25,000 fans had one – a conservative estimate given the culture of German football games.
Reus came through Dortmund’s junior system and won two German Cups with the club, but did not lift the Bundesliga title. Reus, who played in the 2013 Champions League final loss to Bayern Munich, has a chance to lift the most coveted trophy in European football when Dortmund face Real Madrid at Wembley in June – in what will be his final match.
